Crystal cabochons, or "cabs," are great for making crystal jewelry. The word cabochon is derived from the French "caboche," meaning head, perhaps for the round, domed shape that cabochons are typically cut into. Cabs are formed by shaping and polishing, rather than cutting like faceted stones. Opaque gems often look best polished into cabochons rather than faceted, as well as stones that show asterism or a cats-eye effect. Stones with iridescence, like moonstone or opals, also display their unique flash best when cabbed.
Natural crystal stones with sparkling druzy, although technically not cabochons, also look beautiful set in jewelry.
